NCAS 2019

NJSGC affiliate Essex County College ran a successful NCAS (National Community College Aerospace Scholars) program on Oct. 15-18, 2019. Attended by the director of the program, M. Alicia Baturoni Cortez, other NASA personnel, and Dr. Haim Baruh, the program showcased the NCAS student design competition. Thank you to Dr. Nidhal Marashi, professor of Biology at ECC, for managing the program.

NCAS will continue at Essex County College next year, as well.

NJSGC Invites NASA Astronaut to Speak in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

On Friday, July 19, 2019, NJSGC sponsored a talk by astronaut Robert Cenker (STS 25) at Rutgers University to a standing room only audience consisting of K-12 students, undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. Mr Cenker, who flew as a mission specialist, as his company was launching a communications satellite, described his experiences preparing for the flight as well as his experiences onboard the Space Shuttle. A lively question and answer session followed.

NJSGC Rock-SAT-C Team Rocket Launch 2019

Aiden Aquino, Chris Blackwood, Chris Cowan, Joshua Gross, Jack Hymowitz, Scott Maslin, Zack Shoop, Jesse Stevenson, Sam Yakovlev and Prof. Joseph S. NJSGC Annual Poster Session for Academic Year Fellows was held on Friday, May 3, 2019 at The College of New Jersey.  Students and professors viewed student research posters and learned about students' research.

NASA GISS 2018

Students Olufikunayo Famutimi and Cristian Juarez participated in the NASA-GISS Summer program for Scientists and Engineers which is part of a larger program of 25 teams at Barnard College symposium.  In summer 2018 the team of two, led by Professor Joseph S. Miles and Dean Siva Thangam created a robot over the course of a six to eight-week period.  The robot’s mission was to explore a Martian Lava Tube.

Rock-SAT-C 2018

Alexandria Austin, Chris Blackwood, Chris Cowan, Joshua Gross, Zack Shoop, Jesse Stevenson, Adam Testa, Sam Yakovlev and Prof. Joseph S. Miles, recently returned from the annual Rock-SAT-C launch.  Other team members, not pictured, consist of Ronald Ankner, Richard Thorton, Stephen Kontrimas, and Prof. Nicholaus Parziale. The team constructed two experiments for launch on a sounding rocket payload.  The first experiment utilized a pressure sensor to measure turbulent and laminar air flow over the nosecone of the rocket.
